Discord Scamming/Phishing Prevention
Challenge
After the Beta Testing of our RPG shooter video game last October, its Discord Community received feedback from players regarding other users who are engaged in illegal activities such as scamming and phishing. Over time, a number of users began sharing links and sending direct messages, enticing other players with offers of Free Discord Gifts in November 2022. 1.Discord Steam Account: They received an enticing invitation to access exclusive features and perks of Discord Nitro. One of the most common Discord Nitro scams starts with a direct message (DM) from an unknown user, which includes an offer to join the paid service. The scammers claim to have an extra Discord Nitro account that they are willing to give away freely. Others send a direct message asking about the player’s Steam account and links. 2.Dangerous Links: Malicious links are very common on Discord and can be used for a number of reasons, which led the responsible players to have them reported. These links may be created for phishing, malware infection, or something just as harmful.
Resolution
Moderation Team took several steps to address the issue and protect the community members. Discord scams can involve various fraudulent activities aimed at tricking users into sharing personal information, money, or sensitive data. Here are the steps/ guideline that the team did to address the issue.
- Communication: Informed the Community Administrators and Moderators about the scamming alerts. Users were advised to be cautious and not engage with suspicious messages or links.
- Monitor and Respond: MODs (Moderators) kept an eye on the community to ensure the scam doesn’t evolve into a different form. They responded promptly to any reports or concerns raised by users. This thorough monitoring persisted for a month to guarantee the protection of all players against potential scams.
- Additional Tasks: Any of the MOD team should ban the user if the victim sent a proof of the scamming or fraudulent behavior within the Discord server.
- Immediate Action: MODs took immediate action against the scammers. This includes banning their accounts permanently and removing their messages associated with the scam and deleted 7 day chat history.
Result
Acting swiftly for the Discord scammers and communicating effectively created a much safer environment for the game’s community members. There have been no reported instances of players falling victim to scams.
- Scam/Fraud Prevention: This reduced the chances of community members falling victim to scams, phishing attempts, and other fraudulent activities.
- Community Protection: Swift response to scammers protects the community’s vulnerable members, such as newcomers or those who might be less familiar with online security practices. This created a sense of safety and trust within the community.
- Positive Reputation: By effectively dealing with scammers, the game’s community demonstrated its commitment to the well-being of its members. In fact, the members have been engaging and joined the force to report the scammers immediately to the MODs.
In conclusion, acting against scammers and communicating effectively helped the team how these issues should be handled within the community. It establishes a culture of responsibility and accountability. The game’s members felt how the Moderation Team enhanced their safety and engagement to urgently eradicate the scammers.
